Time Is Bendable and Here’s How to Do It.
Remember back when you had a job and/or were dealing with the hundreds of details surrounding raising children? Didn’t you promise yourself that once the kids were grown, once you retired, life would slow down? What happened to that promise?
If you’re like most of the women I know who finally have time to focus on their own needs and wants, slowing down is mostly limited to less time spent in the car commuting and a little more time sipping your morning coffee. Other than that, your days are still packed full of activities. Sure, now they’re things that for the most part you’ve chosen to do, but that doesn’t change the fast pace that still seems to characterize your days.
There’s still too much to do in too little time. Where does the time go? Is it that you just stretch out activities to fill available time or are the number of tasks and projects as numerous as ever? How do you slow down the pace of life and still accomplish all that you wish to do?
The answer lies in your belief system.
You assume that time is a limited commodity – that there are only 24 hours in a day. Americans think of time as moving in a straight line, never doubling back and always moving relentlessly forward. That’s our cultural belief. Yet modern science has proven that space-time twists and bends.
What that means for you is that time is elastic. But, how do you get to experience that in your day-to-day life? There is a way to bend time, to expand or contract it according to your needs. It’s simple but not easy.
Time bending is all about focus.
Professional athletes are regularly coached to do it. For example:
A soccer player may practice in her mind each of the minute, individual steps it takes to kick the perfect goal. She deliberately slows time down to rehearse what it will look like and feel like. In an actual game, her focus is so intense that time seems to stop the moment before she actually kicks the ball. This is a phenomenon that occurs across sports. I’ve talked with football players, wrestlers, and boxers who have all experienced the sensation of time stopping before a hit, a pin, or a punch that lands.
You don’t need that same intensity to live your life at a comfortable pace, fitting in all that you want to do. You do need to pay attention to how you are experiencing time.
Here’s how You can bend time.
Become aware of the moments in your life where they seem to stretch out. Look for the “pauses” that naturally occur. It might be the first moment you notice a glorious sunset that takes your breath away. It could be that moment when you get lost in the beauty of watching light dance across a stream. Perhaps you notice it when you first catch sight of a beloved face you haven’t seen in a while. Each of these examples is an event paired with a strong emotion. That emotion helps to focus you in the immediate moment of Now. Bending time requires being present, not thinking about the past or planning for the future.
So, where in your life are the pauses when time stops? Look for them and you will discover that as you focus on the present moment, life slows. That’s when you can begin to build on your time-bending skills.
