“Moviegoers age 50-plus are a powerful force at the box office,” says a study commissioned by AARP (American Association of Retired Persons). “… Older adults visit the cinema more often than millennials. People 50-plus who saw the 205 film ‘Woman in Gold’ with Helen Mirren go to the movies 14.5 times on average in the course of a year – compared with an average of 6.7 times for customers of any age.”
What does this mean to us? Women over 60? Why, it means that every time we go to the movies we are ‘voting’ for our favorite kinds of movies. So, do we want more movies with older women? With Helen Mirren, Meryl Streep, Whoopi Goldberg, Judi Dench, Alfre Woodard, Lily Tomlin, and — OH, so many other great female stars — then let’s make it a point to go to the movies we like.
Sometimes that’s not so easy to do. Sometimes it’s easier to wait until it comes out on video, to go to the movies the grandkids want to see and just not get around to that movie that has intrigued us personally. Or to go with the movie the spouse wants. But remember our quest here at Me-At Last! — we get a turn and our time to take that turn is now. It’s OK to bring the family along with you.
